How Limited-Scope Legal Services Work in Manitoba

If you’re dealing with a divorce, a separation agreement, or probate in Manitoba, you may not need full-service representation. Limited-scope (unbundled) legal services allow you to hire a lawyer for the specific help you need — without committing to a full file.

You can start by sending a brief summary of your situation. In many cases, I’ll respond with follow-up questions or a short intake form so I can understand your goals and what you need. From there, you can choose the specific support that makes sense — whether that’s advice, document drafting, or review.

You’ll always know what’s included, what it will cost and what happens next.

What I Can Help With

I offer limited-scope legal services (unbundled services), which means you can hire me for advice, drafting, document review, or coaching for the specific part you need help with.

Family law

  • Separation consultation – understand your rights, obligations, and next steps before you make decisions

  • Finalizing uncontested divorces in Manitoba

  • Drafting legally valid separation agreements based on terms you have agreed to

Wills and estates

“General” legal help / legal questions

Sometimes you don’t need a full legal file — you just need to understand what a document means, what your options are, and what to do next.

Examples:

  • Talking through your options before leaving a relationship

  • Reviewing a letter or court document and explaining what it means

  • Understanding a divorce petition you’ve been served with

If you’re not sure whether your issue fits, feel free to send me a brief summary of your situation. I’ll let you know whether it’s something I can help with, and what the cost would be.

What limited-scope services mean
(and what they don’t)

When you hire me on an unbundled basis, I help you with specific tasks—like advice, drafting, document review, and coaching. You stay in control of your file and communications

I do not:

  • communicate with the other party or their lawyer on your behalf

  • take over your file or act as your lawyer “on the record”

  • attend court or speak for you in court

  • accept service of documents for you

  • manage deadlines or file documents for you

  • provide Independent Legal Advice on documents prepared by others, or to the other party on a document I draft

You stay in control of your matter, and I’ll support you with the parts you want help with.

What I Don’t Offer

I focus on specific types of legal work. If your matter falls outside that scope, I’ll let you know early so you can find the right help.

Not a fit (generally):

  • Criminal law matters

  • Immigration law matters

  • Injury / accident claims

  • Matters with urgent court deadlines (unless you confirm availability first)

A Note About Independent Legal Advice (ILA)

Independent legal advice isn’t just a formality. In many cases, it helps ensure that an agreement is informed, voluntary, and enforceable.

While I can prepare a separation agreement for one party on a limited-scope basis, I cannot provide independent legal advice to both parties in the same matter. If there are concerns about fairness, pressure, or understanding of legal rights, seeking independent legal advice is often appropriate.

Choosing not to obtain ILA can carry risks. Clients should consider this carefully before signing any agreement.
